Background of the Study
Mental health is an essential component of overall well-being, yet it remains a neglected aspect of healthcare in many Nigerian communities. Gombe Local Government Area (LGA) in Gombe State is no exception, where stigma, cultural beliefs, and limited access to mental health services hinder awareness and care. Communication plays a crucial role in enhancing mental health awareness by breaking down stigma, promoting understanding, and encouraging help-seeking behavior. Studies highlight that community-based approaches, social media campaigns, and interpersonal communication are effective in creating mental health awareness and improving public attitudes (Ahmed & Bello, 2023). This study examines the role of communication strategies in improving mental health awareness in Gombe LGA, with a focus on participatory and culturally relevant methods.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Mental health issues remain underrecognized and stigmatized in Gombe LGA, leading to inadequate care and poor outcomes for affected individuals. Factors such as misinformation, cultural beliefs, and limited communication efforts exacerbate the problem. Although some initiatives have been implemented to address mental health awareness, their impact is often limited by a lack of culturally sensitive and participatory approaches. This study seeks to evaluate the role of communication in enhancing mental health awareness and promoting access to care in Gombe LGA (Bukar et al., 2024).
1.3 Objectives of the Study
To assess the current level of mental health awareness in Gombe LGA.
To evaluate the effectiveness of communication strategies in promoting mental health awareness.
To recommend communication approaches for reducing stigma and improving mental health care access.

Communication strategies significantly improve mental health awareness in Gombe LGA.
Participatory communication methods reduce stigma associated with mental health issues.
Locally tailored campaigns increase access to mental health services.
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study highlights the importance of communication in addressing mental health challenges, particularly in underserved communities like Gombe LGA. It provides evidence-based recommendations for improving awareness and reducing stigma, which can inform policies and programs at local and national levels. The findings will benefit mental health practitioners, community leaders, and policymakers by offering practical insights into effective communication strategies for promoting mental health.
